As of January 1st, 2004 all chiropractors licensed in New York State must satisfy continuing education requirements. The guidelines listed below are taken from the pending regulations of the Commissioner of Education. Although the regulations have yet to be approved the continuing education requirement is effective January 1st, 2004.
As you may be aware the New York Chiropractic Council has worked diligently along with the New York State Chiropractic Association to form "The Chiropractic Legislative Task Force." Working together we helped insure that our continuing education requirements are reasonable and most importantly can not be construed to implement competency testing or continuing competency certification.
Doctors licensed to practice in New York State must:
- Complete 36 hours of acceptable formal continuing education per triennial (3 years)
- 12 hours may be self-instructional coursework approved by the State Board of Chiropractic
- One-third of the continuing hour requirements must be completed in the subject category of patient communications, record keeping, or other matters of law and ethics which contribute to the professional practice in chiropractic and the health, safety, and/or welfare of the public.
- Each licensee shall maintain, or insure access by the State Education Department to, a record of completed continuing education, which includes: the title of the course, subject of the continuing education, the number of hours completed, the sponsors name and any identifying number, attendance verification if a course, participation verification if self-instructional coursework, and the date and location of the continuing education. Such records shall be retained for at least six years from the date of completion of the continuing education and shall be made available for review by the department.
